Safety = < 4" Openings
You probably know this, but here’s a little reminder. Safety rails are required on the sides of bleachers. If the back of your bleachers are not anchored to the wall, safety enclosures are needed there too.
Newer bleachers, almost always come with proper safety rails, but there are some bleachers with rail gaps greater than 4″. The Consumer Product Safety Commission considers them unsafe.
There are still many facilities with older bleachers that have no rails at all and those are, certainly, accidents waiting to happen.
So the situation is this, you have a rail problem:
- If you have no rails and a foot or seat plank more than 30″ above the floor, you need rails.
- If your rails are not 42″ above the adjacent seatboard, footboard or aisle, you need up-to-date rails.
- If the opening in your rails is greater than 4″ you need to replace those rails.
The good news is that these rails, especially when you consider how they help avoid serious accidents, are inexpensive.
You can use this safety upgrade to spruce up your gym by getting the rails power coated in colors that will liven up your facility. That is a lot of bang for the buck.
Finally, you have a gymnasium safety expert at American Athletix that is just waiting to answer your questions, provide some ideas and price a safety rail upgrade for the safety of your fans.
