Bleacher Death

Aisle rails for safe accessBleacher death and injuries drove the CPSC to report on bleachers about 10 years ago when they noted that 19 people had been killed in falls from bleachers in the previous 20 years.

In just one year, over 3300 children under the age of 15 were admitted into hospital emergency rooms with injuries associated with falling from, or through, bleachers.

Just this month, another death was reported in an Indiana newspaper,  “Authorities in the central Indiana city of Marion say a woman died when she fell from high school bleachers while watching a basketball game.

Grant County Coroner Stephen Dorsey says 56-year-old Julie Smith of Upland died Saturday morning at Eastbrook High School. Dorsey says Smith was climbing the bleachers when she lost her balance and fell 10 feet. He says she suffered two skull fractures. Officials say Smith was pronounced dead after she was taken to a hospital.

Dorsey says Smith worked as a student aid at the school and was watching her grandchildren play when she fell.

The coroner ruled her death an accident.”
